HELP AT HONORS GRADUATION CEREMONY, 9 AM, JUNE 14

You’re invited to help the Honors staff host our big ceremony for Honors Huskies from the class of 2025. We need volunteers from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, June 11 at the HUB Lyceum to help with guest seating, check in, and photography at the event. 

Email forcarey@uw.edu with “graduation helper” if you’re interested in this fun opportunity. Comes with light breakfast and a piece of Honors swag (t-shirt, tote bag, or mug) that you can ONLY get by volunteering for an Honors project or event!

            Are you interested in caring for our community?

Then boy, oh boy, do I have an offer for you! 

My name is Kamden, and I am a third year Interdisciplinary Honors (and Civil Engineering) student here at UW Seattle. I am also a volunteer Kitchen Lead with U-District based non-profit Teen Feed. We urgently need help from folks who are staying on or near campus over the next few months. 

Let me know if you want to hear more via this super short Google form (either for this summer or next fall) and I’ll reach out about scheduling a cook and to answer any questions. 

More Background: Teen Feed provides meals 365 days a year to houseless youth under age 26. During summer months (July, August, and September for them) many of their regular volunteers are unable to show up for this essential service. I am volunteering as a Kitchen Lead and am looking to put together a few teams of 5 to 10 people to cook once a month. There’s no long-term commitment—if you can only come once that will be a big help. All supplies will be provided—you just need to show up! API Chaya’s first ever Student-Led Natural Helpers Program on June 12th!

Our Natural Helpers training will be a completely FREE program held on Thursday, June 12th from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and we currently have host options at UW Seattle, UW Bothell, and over Zoom.  We will also be providing lunch and snacks throughout the day (WOOHOO for free food!!) and will have API Chaya advocates on-site for support through some of the sensitive topics to be discussed. The various workshops and trainings to be held at this event aim to build our community’s understanding of the societal forces that create conditions for Violence (focusing on domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking), as well as building skills to respond to harm and support survivors in culturally responsive, community-centered ways. All of our organizers and presentation/discussion facilitators are fellow UW students and recent alumni, committing to this project’s “by-and-for” mission. Any students passionate about survivor advocacy and justice, who feel the need for a supportive and safer campus environment, or who just want to learn more about how they can be a caring resource for friends & loved ones should absolutely join our Natural Helpers Program and community!

Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership program (WE Lead) Student Board Recruitment + Upcoming Events

The Buerk Center’s Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership program (WE Lead) promotes the advancement of women as entrepreneurs, leaders, investors, and agents of innovation. WE Lead welcomes students of any gender, and features programming and events that center the experiences of women in entrepreneurship and leadership settings. Graduate and undergraduate students from any degree-seeking program and academic discipline are welcome. WE Lead is currently seeking applicants interested in a leadership role on the WE Lead Student Board – the application is now open (deadline: 5/30).

Roles on the Student Board are ideal for students wishing to invest their time and leadership skills in a significant capacity. These students will be part of shaping programming for the Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership program (WE Lead), and will have opportunities to develop skills, connect with creative and innovative leaders on and off campus, and provide feedback, advice, and support for this co-curricular program.

Interested students can learn more by reading the Student Board Overview and Job Descriptions, and are encouraged to join us for the final info session on 5/28. We also encourage interested students to attend an upcoming event to learn more about WE Lead. A list of upcoming events can be found below.

  >>  Gates Cambridge Scholarships: Supports 1-4 years of graduate study at Cambridge University.   >>  Rhodes Scholarships: Provides funding for 2-3 years at Oxford University. Open to citizens of any country, and eligibility requirements and nomination processes vary by country. US applicant eligibility requirements include a 3.7 GPA or higher and 18-23 years old by 10/1/25, or up to 27 years old if you will complete your first degree after 10/1/25. UW nomination required for US candidates and Global candidates.

  >>  Marshall Scholarships: Provide 1-2 years of funding to study at any university in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship, 3.7 GPA or higher, and earn a first bachelor’s degree anytime between April 2023-August 2026. $8k Research Awards for Students w/o Research Experience

Dear Students,  

We are excited to announce that the Office of Undergraduate Research is launching a new interdisciplinary research program, the Undergraduate Research Collective! 

The Undergraduate Research Collective is a two-year program designed for first-year, second-year, and first-year transfer students with no prior research experience. Students enroll in a two-quarter seminar focused on research preparation and community-building, are matched with a faculty mentor to conduct research, and receive an $8,000 scholarship over the course of their two-year participation. 

To apply for the Undergraduate Research Collective, students must: 

  • Be a first-year, second-year or first-year transfer student in the 2025-26 academic year. 
  • Be registered full-time (at least 12 credits) during the award period, pursuing a bachelor’s degree at the University of Washington campus in Seattle.  
  • Have no prior faculty-mentored research experience outside of a course.  

If you’re curious about research and are looking for a community of support, this program may be exactly what you’re looking for! This course has no prerequisite. 

EDUC 401 C is a community-engaged course designed to support reflection for UW students already engaged in childcare or education work. Credits are earned through discussion post assignments, three synchronous reflection discussions across the summer quarter, and the completion of field work hours.

Summer Class Info (Opportunity for Honors Credit!)

Dear Honors Students:

I am reaching out to share some information on my summer course, ENVIR 380, Wilderness in the Anthropocene. 

As always, we will be backpacking in spectacular mountain areas for about a week as part of the course. No prior experience is required and we can help with equipment needs. 

The course explores the history and philosophy of wilderness, issues in wilderness management, and issues in wilderness recreation. We use a diversity lens to explore many of these topics. Students select topics and lead discussions during our backcountry trip. Reading assignments before the July 12-19 trip are asynchronous.

I am always willing to Honorize the course for any students needing Honors credit.

So many Honors students are involved in exciting things on our campus, but did you know that you have the opportunity to highlight your involvements in Honors and beyond through our Honors Student Community page?

Students with profiles on our website are Honors students who are involved across campus in many different capacities—from RAs, Peer Facilitators, FIG leaders, RSOs, research, internships, service, and more. Students on the Community Profile page act as a resource for current, incoming, and prospective students as someone to reach out to if students have questions that are best suited for a peer.

Graduate-level Credit opportunities in Geography for Autumn 2025!

Honors is excited to announce that some Graduate-level courses in Geography will accept Honors student enrollment for Autumn 2025 for 3rd and 4th year students. No prior background in geography is needed! View the available courses on our courses webpage under Electives. Students should email instructors asking for permission to enroll and say that they are Honors students in this request. To receive Honors Elective credit, students must fill out the Graduate-level Credit form. Please reach out to the Geography academic adviser (geogadv@uw.edu) with any questions!

Immigrant Rights are Human Rights RSO Petition

A UW RSO is sharing this petition to support the efforts of La Resistencia, a grassroots organization working to end the detention of immigrants and stop deportations.

Their members support and engage with people detained at the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) in Tacoma, Washington who are living in inhumane conditions and are being denied access to necessary medical treatment.

Their Free Them All Committee in particular is focused on raising awareness of the conditions in the NWDC and sharing the stories of the people in detention.

These petitions are for people in detention and can be sent to the Washington legislature or ICE as an attempt to push for improved living conditions and immigrants’ release.

Scholarship Opportunities

Carnegie Young Leaders for Civic Preparedness | Deadline: May 28

Carnegie Young Leaders for Civic Preparedness is looking for young people between the ages of 14 and 24 who are ready to step up, bridge divides, and tackle pressing issues in their communities. $2,500 for team lead, $1,000 for each team member.

Study in Japan: MEXT Research Student Scholarship | Deadline: May 30

Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) offers fully funded government scholarships to international students to further their studies at a Japanese university or college. The Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle accepts applications for the scholarships from residents in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Montana and Washington State.

Zachary H. Boyce Memorial Scholarship | Deadline: June 6

The Zachary H. Boyce Memorial Scholarship was established in his memory to further spread what he was accomplishing. Zachary attended the University of Washington but unexpectedly passed away in 2003. The award amount is $2,500. 

Mortar Board Alumni/Tolo Foundation Scholarship | Deadline: June 30

To be considered, an applicant must be an enrolled student at the University of Washington during the 2024-2025 academic year. The applicant also must be a sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student at the University of Washington in 2025-26. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher. These scholarships range between $2,000 and $3,000.

CSPC At-Large Fellows Program | Deadline: July 1

The At-Large program opens the Presidential Fellows Program to students from non-partner schools, broadening access and

cohort diversity. Over an academic year, Fellows are given the opportunity to study the policymaking process and the inner-workings of the executive and legislative branches.

Herschel & Caryl Roman Scholarship | Deadline: July 1

The scholarship, which provides up to a total of $2500 for the academic year, will be awarded to one or two undergraduates who demonstrate an interest in genetic research. 

Levinson Emerging Scholars and Washington Research Foundation Fellowship | Deadline: July 13

The Levinson Emerging Scholars (LES) Program is designed to support promising students who work on creative and sophisticated research projects in biosciences and related fields under the guidance of UW faculty. You can apply for both awards at the same time. Each year, about ten students are selected; award amounts are $8,000. 

Check In With Yourself

Neighborhood House has launched an innovative campaign called Check In With Yourself, an application designed to support undergraduate mental health, particularly among UW students. After completing a brief online survey, users receive personalized resources tailored to their mental health needs. This initiative aims to address the often-overlooked mental health challenges faced in the high-intensity, stressful environment of college life.

Global Health Minor Information

Dear Students,

Interested in the Global Health Minor? Join us for an information session to learn about courses, requirements, and working in the global health field. This program provides the opportunity to become familiar with policies, research, determinants, and outcomes in global health, actively engaging in efforts to improve health as global citizens.

Get Certified: Free Red Cross CPR/AED, First Aid & Overdose Response Training for UW Students

University of Washington Emergency Medical Services (UWEMS) is offering American Red Cross Adult CPR/AED, First Aid and Naloxone Use training sessions throughout this winter quarter, available for free to any UW-affiliated student, staff, or faculty. Courses are taught by our team of American Red Cross Instructors and Emergency Medical Technicians.

During the sessions, you’ll learn to recognize and respond to common cardiac, respiratory, drug-related, and first-aid emergencies. Upon successful completion, you’ll receive certification and a complimentary naloxone kit to take home!

Peer Wellness Coaching

Prepare for academic stress this quarter by looking into Peer Wellness Coaching.

Peer Wellness Coaching is a free service offered by UW LiveWell and provides 1:1 goal-oriented sessions to students. If students need support for any sort of well-being goal (i.e. relationship conflicts, managing academic stress), coaches can help them build the skills to solve problems effectively and make intentional, positive change on their wellbeing goals.

Pre-Genetic Counseling Club

The Pre-Genetic Counseling Club (PGCC) is a new club at the University of Washington that aims to bring awareness to the genetic counseling profession. PGCC is currently recruiting both undergraduate and graduate students to join, as a member and/or part of leadership. There will be opportunities for graduate students to give presentations about GC to lay audiences (which is great for those who have not fulfilled that requirement yet), amongst other exciting educational and networking opportunities.
