Husky Lunch Network

27th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium

We are excited to announce that applications for the 27th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium at the University of Washington are now open! We encourage you to share this opportunity with your students and encourage them to apply. 2024 Winter Job and Internship Fair

DATE: Tuesday, February 13, 2024

A career fair is a connection opportunity for employers who have open roles and students who are currently in the job search phase. At an in-person career fair, events are hosted on campus in a large meeting space, wherein employers set up booths for students and alumni to visit. In-person career fairs are a great way for students to meet face-to-face with representatives of companies that appeal to students’ majors, interests, and goals.

The 2024 In-Person Winter Job & Internship fair is open to all majors and years of study, including alumni of all three UW campuses and community members. 101 registered employers are actively recruiting Huskies for full- and part-time career and internship roles across all industries. Waseda Summer Session 2024

We are thrilled to announce that applications will be opening soon for Waseda Summer Session 2024! We offer this once-in-a-lifetime program for Undergraduate students worldwide from June 17 to July 26, 2024. Whether they want to explore their academic interests or Japanese unique cultures, our face-to-face summer session provides the perfect opportunity. Students will also have the chance to meet new friends and experience campus life at Waseda.

Participants will choose 2 out of 16 courses in the context of Japan and Asia Pacific and can earn four credits (2 credits for each). For more details, please see here. The classes are entirely taught in English by well-known faculty members.

In addition, and most importantly, there will be a lot of extracurricular activities such as Japanese language exercises, field trips, site visits, and cultural events!

Leon, Spain Study Abroad In-person Info Session

Exploring histories of resistance and resilience in contemporary social justice movements in Spain and the Spanish language diaspora through the lens of participatory dance and music communities, this program based at the UW Léon Center will examine how practices in sound create spaces of belonging. Students will connect with a feminist immigrant justice organization in the Basque Country, participate in music and dance workshops, and culminate with a community music Fandango celebration in Madrid that brings together community and dance from the Americas. Via theoretical frameworks drawing on decolonization, trauma-informed theory, transnational feminism, and neoliberalism/ globalization, this program will explore gender and race in a variety of musical traditions, genres, and scenes.

Knight-Hennessy Scholars at Stanford University

Knight-Hennessy scholars develop deep domain expertise in their Stanford graduate program, and build on this domain expertise through exposure to a wide range of disciplines and cultures within the Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS) community. Scholars participate in the King Global Leadership Program (KGLP), which includes workshops, lectures, projects, and experiences that strengthen transformational leadership capabilities. Through KGLP, scholars collaborate and prepare to address important challenges and opportunities facing the world, such as climate change, healthcare, government and policy, and education.

Through KGLP, scholars strengthen their multicultural and multidisciplinary perspective and develop leadership skills and traits, including creative problem solving, decision making during uncertainty, effective collaboration, and how to communicate ideas in a compelling way.

Knight-Hennessy scholars receive up to three years of funding to pursue graduate studies at Stanford. This includes the JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MS, DMA, and PhD programs, as well as joint- and dual-degrees.

More-than-human Worlds: The Poetics and Politics of Life, SIAH 2024

What becomes possible when we decenter the human in the arts and humanities? The 2024 Summer Institute in the Arts and Humanities (SIAH) aims to cultivate an appreciation of plants, water, rocks, and the broader more-than-human-world as agentive, animate, and entangled with human lifeworlds. To this end, the 2024 SIAH will introduce frameworks and methods from Indigenous epistemologies, critical animal studies, multispecies ethnography, and the environmental humanities to explore the human and non-human dimensions of racial formations, settler colonialism, extractive capitalism, captivity, war, and other forms of violence. Ultimately, SIAH students will be encouraged to cross disciplinary and species boundaries in crafting imaginative explorations of the expansive and resilient politics and poetics of life. 

In the initial weeks, the summer institute teaching team invites students to engage with texts and invited speakers that explore the crisis around conceptions of the human and the toll of human-centeredness, such as climate change and species extinction. With the conceptual tools and frameworks of Indigenous Studies and other critical intellectual traditions, students will explore the more-than-human entanglements at work in multiple forms and genres, like oral narratives, literary fiction and poetry, visual arts, cinema/time-based art, and other forms of storytelling, signifying, and witnessing. The second half of the course allows students to further explore those themes and develop, discuss, and produce in-depth research projects (which can include creative work) with the mentorship of the teaching team. A background in the arts and humanities is not what is most important; rather, it is your interest in joining a respectful, open, and at times difficult conversation about the role of the arts and humanities in reconceptualizing a world that holds many worlds.

Participating in the SIAH is an excellent fit for your Honors experiential learning requirement in the area of research. Talk to an Honors adviser if you have questions about the process for applying.

Additionally, the instructors are open to talking with students who may be interested in receiving ad hoc Honors credit about developing a project focused on personal reflection of your research process, experience, and product in the SIAH. UW Lopez Island Study Away Early Fall 2024

As you start planning your summer, consider the following early fall program, alongside the regular Honors offerings. Program Director Professor Kerry W. Reding is happy to work with Interdisciplinary Honors students to develop an ad hoc Honors project and to have it count towards Honors Experiential Learning (leadership or service). Please note Interdisciplinary Honors students will need to apply for the ad hoc Honors project for this course, and for Experiential Learning – it is not automatic.

Lopez Island Reconnecting Food Roots:

Through this program, students will experience the inspiring food network of Lopez Island. The program aims to empower students by connecting them to the people, places, and practices involved in growing food sustainably. We will connect to the rich island life through our eating, living, learning, and working within this island-contained local food system. The program focuses on reconnecting the roots of a food system to a specific locality, creating and navigating community, and supporting multifaceted well-being in a local food system.  Students will spend time learning from local farmers and food makers at the center of the food system and learn to trace the webs of relationship and food security as they interconnect. They will be supported to think creatively and critically about what it takes to be in reciprocity with these systems and how to seek out and work with local food systems wherever they are. There will be experiential education and exploration of food and climate systems through air, land, and sea.

The program will include local land-based foods learning, storytelling, local farm tours and workshops, yoga classes, a Labyrinth walk, herbal medicine classes, community building, practical food harvesting, preparation and preservation skill sharing, education on climate health, and tangible actions for students to implement that can support a healthy climate and a resilient food system. There will be a component of service work to give back to the community at the end of the program in the spirit of good reciprocity.

Lopez Study Away

Being Michelle D Center Screening

The D Center invites you to join us in viewing the award-winning documentary, Being Michelle, followed by a post-screening panel discussion with Being Michelle team members and other community leaders on Wednesday, February 28th at the HUB (Husky Union Building) Lyceum. Doors will open at 5:30 pm and the movie will begin at 6 pm. This event will be live streamed for registered guests and is open to the public at no charge. Light refreshments will be provided, as well as free parking at Padelford Garage or Central Plaza Garage after registration.

Being Michelle encapsulates the story and perspective of a previously incarcerated Deaf woman with autism named Michelle. It follows her journey and touches on her fight through the legal system and using art to depict and work through past traumas. With this in mind, the event will primarily be presented in American Sign Language (ASL), as the movie itself involves ASL, however it is also voiced and open-captioned. There will be ASL interpreters to help support communication throughout the event.

Spring 2024 disABLEDperson National Scholarship Competition

disABLEDperson, Inc. announces our Spring 2024 National Scholarship Competition for College Students with Disabilities! This competition begins on January 2, 2024, and ends on March 15, 2024, for the award of $2000.00 (two thousand dollars)! Details at www.disABLEDperson.com

To participate, follow these simple steps: Write an essay with no more than 1000 words (prompt can be found HERE. Next, you need to register for the competition. To do so click on “Register for this Scholarship” link. Fill out the form completely and paste your essay into the form.

A few reminders: Please keep in mind that the form must be filled out completely. We cannot accept incomplete or fraudulent forms. Correct spelling and grammar are important. Please submit carefully edited drafts only.

To qualify, the student must be enrolled in a 2 or 4-year accredited college or university in the United States of America. They must be a matriculated student attending school full-time and U.S. citizens. We will accept students who are not attending school full-time as long as the part-time attendance is due to their disability and not their financial situation (minimum of 6 credits for undergraduate, 6 credits for graduate). Unfortunately, we are not able to award scholarships to high school students.

Upon winning, the student will prove disability and matriculation through their Disability Student Services department. We define disability as described under the ADA: “A physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities of such an individual. A record of such an impairment or being regarded as having such an impairment”.

Community, Environment, and Planning Major Open House

Interested in urban planning, community outreach, and have a passion for environmental issues? Consider majoring in Community, Environment, and Planning! 

Our application for admission to the 2024 cohort is currently open. Priority admission is February 15. While CEP is a capacity-constrained major, we have a 90-100% acceptance rate.

About the major:

Community, Environment, and Planning is an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree that is completed in two years (junior and senior years). This major was built by and for students. It is cohort-based with emphases in student engagement and leadership. The core curriculum provides a foundation in theory and applied real-world practice of supporting communities, stewarding the environment, and engaging with the built environment. This program allows the flexibility for students to pursue individual interests by selecting electives from all across campus.

Career Outcomes: Urban planners, educators, non-profit managers, entrepreneurs, communication experts, and professionals of all sorts.

Obama Foundation Leaders Program

The Obama Foundation’s Leaders program aims to inspire, empower, and connect regional cohorts of changemakers to accelerate positive and lasting change in their communities and throughout their region.

These emerging leaders from around the world, generally 24-45 years old, forge societies and communities rooted in shared values, where all people belong, participate, and thrive.

The Leaders program launched in Africa in 2018, expanded to Asia Pacific in 2019, and inaugurated Europe in 2020. During the Obama Foundation Democracy Forum in New York City, we announced our newest program in the United States.

Obama Foundation Leaders hail from a wide variety of nations and territories, work across public, private, and nonprofit sectors, and address a full range of social impact issues.

The Leaders program offers practical skill building for social change, leadership coaching, discussion of critical issues, and small group support. As participants, Leaders self-define a values-based foundation for sustained leadership, cultivate relationships with others to catalyze more inclusive, lasting change, and prepare to engage with issues at the systems level.

Upon completion of the program, Leaders will have gained a deeper understanding of how values-based leadership advances their ability to enact change. They will be inspired to take further action, propelled by new ideas and skills. Most importantly, Leaders will continue to gain a broader continental and global perspective, joining the Obama Leadership Network, a growing global alumni community of over 1,000 active changemakers.

Did you know that UW students can visit the Burke for free with a Husky ID? Whether you’ve taken advantage of this amazing resource already, or this is your first time, join Samantha-Lynn on a walkthrough of the Museum with a behind-the-scenes look at some of the collections. This is an incredible opportunity to explore arts, culture, and natural history while you’re on campus, and consider courses that are offered AT the Burke too (including an honors course!). We hope you can make it, and grab a bite to eat at the Burke’s Off the Rez Café after the walkthrough!

The walkthrough will start at 12:00 at the Burke Museum on 2/29. Due to limited space, an RSVP is required for this event. Students must have a valid Husky ID in order to enter the museum for free!

Samantha-Lynn Martinez (she/her) is a third-year Interdisciplinary Honors student studying Marine Biology and Biology: Ecology, Evolution and Conservation. Aside from her experience in marine science, she is also a designer/illustrator, and has worked for marine science organizations around the area, the aquarium, and some other fields outside marine science like the UW astronomy department, and even Cotopaxi! UW Seattle’s Public Health-Global Health (PH-GH) Major’s Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science New Degree Pathways

We would like to update you about upcoming changes to the UW Seattle’s Public Health-Global Health (PH-GH) Major’s Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree pathways that will be effective beginning Autumn 2024.  These changes are part of our long-term strategy to continually improve public health and global health undergraduate education and experience. 

More Choices to PH-GH Major Admissions Prerequisites: 

·        Beginning with students applying through the upper-division admissions process to enter the PH-GH Major in Autumn 2024, students may use courses with an AES-prefix, including AFRAM, AES, AAS, or CHSTU only, or an AIS-prefix to meet the introductory public health course prerequisite.

Deeper Learning with Revised PH-GH Major Degree Requirements 

Starting in Autumn 2024, students will complete the following degree requirements: 

·        SPH 389: Race, Racism, and Public Health (5 credits).  Introduction to race, racism, and structural oppression, and their impact on the health and wellness of populations.  Note: SPH 389 replaces the one-credit diversity seminar – SPH 489: Structural Racism & Public Health. 

·        SPH 391/392/396: Public Health Service Learning (6 credits).  Service-learning experience where students work with community-facing organizations addressing health needs for a wide range of populations.  Note: SPH 391/392/396 replaces the 400-level service learning course, formerly Public Health Capstone, that took place as the culminating experience in the final year of the program. 

·        SPH 493: Public Health Portfolio (3 credits).  Culminating experience documenting student progress through the Public Health-Global Health Major.  Note: SPH 493 replaces the former Public Health Capstone. 

·        Social & Behavioral Sciences Breadth requirement is reduced to 15 credits (from 25 credits) and students may use courses with an AES-prefix, including AFRAM, AES, AAS, and CHSTU only, and an AIS-prefix to meet the requirement.  Note: the S&BS Breadth requirement is no longer limited to 5 different 5-credit courses but will be 15 credits total with a minimum of 3 different departments and any course level will be accepted.  

The degree requirements described above are available to students only after they have been admitted to the PH-GH Major.  Prospective students who are interested in completing other degree requirements in advance of applying to the PH-GH Major should work with their pre-major adviser to discuss course planning and parallel academic paths.  Read more about PH-GH Major’s future degree requirements here

How Students and Advisers Can Learn More About PH-GH Curriculum Changes 

It is important to note that prospective students will be able to run a degree audit reflective of curriculum changes starting SUM 2024.  Until then, we recommend students and campus partners refer to the resources below for degree and course planning. 

If you are working with students who may be interested in the PH-GH Major, please let them know about upcoming information sessions and drop-in advising happening in Winter 2024 (additional sessions can be found on our Prospective Student Events calendar):
